Nearest Green Distillery - The 'What Lifts You' Angel Wings mural and Grand Re-Opening

Nearest Green Distillery, the home of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey in Shelbyville, Tennessee has announced an investment of $2.1 million to acquire 53.12 adjacent acres. All combined the distillery now sits on 323.12 acres and extends its road frontage to an impressive half a mile.

The 100 Acre ‘Field of Dreams’

Just like the lyrics of Luke Bryan’s song say, “Rain makes corn, corn makes whiskey” a lot of this new land plus some of the existing property will be used to grow corn. The folks at Uncle Nearest plan to dedicate 100 acres of their land to create a ‘Field of Dreams’ to grow its own non-GMO, organic corn to be used in its whiskey making operations.

“When we broke ground, we made history as the first distillery in America to be named after a Black person. Every day, our brand continues to make history and we are finding more and more people wanting to celebrate this history with us at record numbers,” said Fawn Weaver, CEO and founder of Uncle Nearest.

“Expanding our distillery allows us to increase our production capabilities, as well as to continue to enhance the guest experience, so every person who visits has a reason to return again and again.”

Nearest Green Distillery, home of the legacy of Nearest Green, the first known African American master distiller. The distillery celebrated it original grand opening to the public in September 2019. Unfortunately, like most public facing businesses it shuts its doors to visitors in early 2020 because of the pandemic. In recognition of Juneteenth on June 19, 2021 the distillery re-opened its doors to the public with a grand opening ribbon cutting with 10,000 of its closest friends. The ribbon cutting also celebrated Phase Two with the additions of a new Welcome Center; Philo + Frank’s, the world’s first non-alcoholic speakeasy; the first single barrel rickhouse and a Family Tasting Room.

“Every weekend, when Nearest Green Distillery opens its doors, we welcome guests from all over the country. At any given time, we have guests from more than 20 states represented, who have all come to Tennessee to experience the cementing of the legacy of Nearest Green,” said Weaver.

Tours at Nearest Green Distillery are currently available on weekends. Tour openings fill up quickly so it’s a good idea to go online or call ahead to make reservations for a distillery tour or tasting.
