Distillers grain is a byproduct of the distillation process. Distillers Grain – DG may contain a mixture of corn, rye, wheat, barley, rice or various other grains. Distillers have to decide what to do with massive amounts of grains every day. In small amounts it may go down the drain but in large amounts it must be processed and hauled away.

Distillers spent grains may be processed as wet or dry. Wet Distillers Grains – WDG may be sent to a local farm to feed to livestock. If the farmer doesn’t show up it may shut down operations. Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles – DDGS is WDG that has been dried partially or completely. The dried grain mash is generally easier to transport and may be repurposed for animal feed additives or artisanal flours or bakery mixes.
