This is not your typical Budweiser Super Bowl commercial. No instead for this Super Bowl 50 commercial Budweiser is using no puppies, no rolling fields of grain and not a single horse. Instead, it’s Helen Mirren eating in a restaurant alone in a dark restaurant scolding us for even considering driving drunk. Oh and she’s not watching the game, go figure.

Budweiser is using the bright lights of advertising’s biggest stage—Super Bowl 50—to take on drunk driving in an unexpected, unorthodox and powerful way. To spark conversations about this vital issue on one of the biggest drinking occasions of the year, the brand has called upon actress Helen Mirren, with her mix of gravitas and charm, to demand that beer drinkers make a plan to get home safely. “Simply Put,” Budweiser’s new 60-second spot, stands apart from the typical drunk driving PSA by forcefully calling out drivers to #GiveADamn and protect their lives and the lives of others, in a tone that only Mirren can deliver.
“So I’ll sum it up like this: If you drive drunk, you, simply put, are a short-sighted, utterly useless, oxygen-wasting, human form of pollution, a Darwin Award-deserving, selfish coward. If your brain was donated to science, science would return it. So stop it. Now the chances are you are a fun solid respectable human being. Don’t be a pillock. Your friends and family thank you. The friend and family of other drivers thank you. Your future self thanks you. Cheers, nice and cold!”
I’ll save you the time of looking it up.
Definition of pillock in English
Pillock: Syllabification: pil·lock
British informal: A stupid person.
To encourage fans to find safe rides home on game night, Budweiser created StandWithBud.com, which provides people with the most convenient transportation options based on their locations, from taxis to car services (including discount codes where permissible). StandWithBud also invites people to take a pledge to #GiveADamn and not drive drunk on Super Bowl Sunday, then share their commitment on social media using Mirren’s brazen tone.
Shock Top Super Bowl 50 Commercial
Shock Top uses their Wedgehead mascot, the talking beer tap to smack down comedian T.J. Miller with 90 seconds of insults. I’m sure the spot will be cut down for game day.
And Who Can Resist a Line About Bacon?
Shock Top Wedgehead: You look like you were raised in the wild but your dad worked a lot.
T.J. Miller: Well, yeah, he had to bring home that wolf bacon.
