As the Kentucky River flooded the Buffalo Trace Distillery property, a new kind of visitor arrived at the distillery, fish. More than 250 lbs. of fish made up of more than a dozen species including the Buffalo fish, found their way a quarter mile inland onto the property. As the river began to recede, many of these fish were left trapped in newly formed ponds. With oxygen levels dropping in the ponds, it was time to take action to save the fish. That’s when students at nearby Kentucky State University waded into the muddy waters at Buffalo Trace to rescue the fish. All the captured fish have been moved to the university for rehab. After a while, the fish will be released back into the wild where they can continue their bourbon journey hoping to find their next unicorn.
