When Did Stoli Get into the Bourbon Business?

Stoli Group got into the bourbon business in January 2017 when they purchased the Kentucky Owl brand from 5th Generation Bourbon Maker Dixon Dedman. The brand was founded in 1879 by C.M. Dedman who produced bourbon until his distillery was shut down in 1916 as the nation approached Prohibition.

Dixon Dedman restarted the Kentucky Owl bourbon brand as a non-distiller producer (NDP) in 2014. As the small but notable brand, Stoli, wanting to get on the bourbon band wagon, purchased the young brand for an undisclosed amount in 2017.

In November 2017 Stoli Group announced a grand plan to invest $150 million to build Kentucky Owl Park in The Bourbon Capital of the World, Bardstown, Kentucky. They acquired a 420-acre stone quarry that would be the base of their new distillery and visitor center. Plans included a 21st century design with pyramid shaped buildings, a train station, entertainment venue, visitor accommodations and more. There have been many promises of when this project would start, redesigns, timelines but alas, other than the fact that all the quarries filled up with water in record time, nothing has really happened on the property.

In May 2021, in his role as Master Blender, Dixon Dedman left the company and has since moved on and launched his own new whiskey brand 2XO (“Two Times Oak”) brand. Will he buy Kentucky Owl and the family name back? Time will tell.

Stoli Group (USA), LLC and Kentucky Owl, LLC are expected to present their next step plans in just over 30 days. Sign up for our newsletter to stay current on this and all spirits industry news stories.

DistilleryTrail has visited the Kentucky Owl Park Distillery property several times and it beautiful. Building a distillery on a quarry, even if it is limestone, creates many challenges. That said, the land and the many lakes here are gorgeous. Whatever happens on the Kentucky Owl Bourbon front, let’s hope this land is put to good use. Perhaps Kentucky’s next great state park? It’s a gem of a property!
