What started as a summer job turned into a love affair lasting nearly half a century and counting.
In June 1981 Edward “Eddie” Freeman Russell took a summer job at Wild Turkey Distilling Co. in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. 45 years later, 2nd Generation Master Distiller Eddie Russell is still at Wild Turkey working right alongside side his father, the infamous Buddha of Bourbon, Master Distiller Jimmy Russell, the longest-tenured, active Master Distiller in the global spirits industry.
The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States – DISCUS honored Master Distiller Eddie Russell with the association’s coveted Lifetime Achievement award at its 2026 DISCUS Annual Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. The DISCUS Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates an individual that has supported the industry throughout their lifetime through significant innovation, promotion of the industry, commercial strategy, advocacy or responsibility.

He has overseen the introduction of many pivotal products into the Wild Turkey family, including a collaboration with his father to create the award-winning whiskey brand, Russell’s Reserve, and the introduction of Wild Turkey Bourbon (originally called Wild Turkey 81).
In 2010, Eddie Russell joined his father in the bourbon industry when he was inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame™, and today, the two work side by side. Together, they celebrate more than100 years of combined experience at the Wild Turkey.
“I started in 1981 in June,” said Master Distiller Eddie Russel. “I thought I was going to work there for a summer and wound up a couple weeks in realizing this was the place for me.
“I’ve had the privilege of hanging around Booker, Elmer (Noe, James B. Beam Distilling Co.), Parker (Beam – Heaven Hill Distillery), Bill (Samuels, Jr. – Maker’s Mark Distillery), Chris (Morris – Woodford Reserve Distillery), and Lincoln (Henderson – Angel’s Envy Distillery) and all those guys. It was such valuable lessons, listening to their stories and their thoughts.
“You know, a lot of it’s been tradition, passed down through generation after generation. There will be another Samuels down the road someday. It’ll be different people. Wild Turkey’s lucky to have another Russell (Eddie’s son Assistant Master Blender Bruce Russell), that’s going to come along and continue the legacy.
“So for me, here in 2026, it’s been a long amazing summer job.”
